Owners Jonathan and Karen Hanken have continued to meet the highest standards of excellence that BERNINA awards dealers in each of their years in Medford . Our goal is to provide sewing enthusiasts and quilters in Southern Oregon the advantage of expert knowledge and skills, combined with highly personal, easy to access service.

We strive to bring prints and styles to inspire your imagination and options you haven’t seen elsewhere. Top Stitch BERNINA has been serving the Rogue Valley in beautiful Southern Oregon since 1998; our home area includes the Oregon Coast (Brookings) to Northern California (Yreka), and the I-5 corridorin Jackson (Ashland), Josephine (Grants Pass) and Douglas (south of Roseburg) counties.

Our Stories:
Jonathan Hanken applauds his mom for letting him use her old Kenmore to make street hockey pads while in elementary school. She had better sense to sew the black velvet prom tux herself, but only because it wouldn’t exist off the rack until the following year. He went on to realize that sewing was a viable skill as friends with bands and cosplay re-enactors kept hiring him to sew them custom looks.
His frequent trips to the local fabric store opened a job opportunity and his professional career in the sewing industry has continued ever since. Though Jonathan’s sewing skills brought him to the field, his innate mechanical talent and love of engineering has been his greatest contribution, as sewists from all over have come to trust his technical skill in the service department .
Years ago we made the decision to limit his work to
BERNINA
brand machines so that he could take care of our customers more quickly, without abandoning the thoroughness he is known for. It also lets him
teach our new owner sewing classes
that are included with your machine purchase. Jonathan is known for bringing a wealth of information – tailored to his students – and accompanied by his enjoyable humor. The value of his expertise makes Top Stitch the smartest choice for your

Karen Hanken has had a life-long love of fabrics and first started experimenting with them as an art student earning her BFA, but she struggled with anything that involved sewing until she had a BERNINA. It was husband Jonathan that assisted by stitching anything that required a machine prior to that life-changing acquisition. Now she has many
award-winning art quilts
under her belt and she continues to experiment with fabric and the creative possibilities of her BERNINA sewing machines and presser feet. She says of her sewing,
“I know everything I know from having done it wrong first.”
Karen is our store buyer and merchandiser. Her tastes are reflected in the
fabrics and patterns
you’ll find when you visit. She keeps an eye on trends beyond quilting, such as home decorator styles and personalized fashion sewing. You’ll enjoy seeing her creative ideas for projects throughout the store.
